Sizzix Bunting Tutorial

Morning all! Want a super quick and easy project to complete your celebration/event/space? This bunting whips up quick and has so many possibilities!

I’m creating a two tone reversible banner in spring colours, perfect for any Easter celebrations.

Materials:

1″ wide twill tape
Fabric

The twill tape can be as long as you want your bunting to be + extra to be able to tie it up.

The fabric can all be the same fabric, use up scraps or charm squares for a more random look, you can even embellish them to customise them for specific events!

Tools:

Sizzix Big Shot/ Big Shot Plus/ Big Shot Pro and an appropriate Die such as Sizzix Bigz tumbler, large circle or HST die (for these instructions I’ll be using the tumbler die)

You could cut these out also but the die makes it a lot quicker.

Method:

1. Layer up your fabric on the die, this can be up to 8 layers at a time! You need two tumbler pieces for each bunting ‘flag’

2. Place two tumblers right sides facing and sew along the two long sides and the short bottom with a 1/4″ seam allowance (the short side will be the bottom of the flag) leaving the longer top side open for turning. Repeat for as many flags as required. If using circles you can sew right round the entire edge then cut in half and turn.

3. Clip the bottom corners and turn each flag right way out, making sure the corners are poked right out to get a crisp shape, and press.

4. Lay out your twill tape and find the centre. Work outwards spacing your flags equally along the tape (I used a ruler to ensure a consistent 1″ gap between each flag). Each flag should cover half of the tapes width. Fold the tape in half lengthways and pin regularly.

5. Sew along the entire length of the twill tape about 1/8″ from the open edge ensuring that each flag is caught between the two layers of twill tape and encasing the raw edges of the flags. Trim each end of the twill tape and tie a basic knot to neaten off each end.

6. Your done! Hang your bunting up and enjoy your party with a few cocktails to celebrate!

Want to mix things up?

Experiment! I made a set for a swap a while back and cut up some extra contrasting tumblers and did some reverse appliqué before sewing the front and back together but you could sew other embellishments on before or after the flag construction depending on what style you are going for.

Boo bunting

The possibilities are as long as a piece of string (or bunting!)

Looking for something quicker?

Use card stock tumblers and a hole punch to do a no-sew version. You could even do implied bunting and just stick them to the wall without the string.

Use sticky vinyl to create silhouette bunting. This stuff sticks the the wall and can be taken off without leaving residue so is a great option for rented space also.
